The height of the cage is relatively unimportant as cortunix (most quail species) are ground dwellers. One thing I learned fast is that to cage top needs to be flexible. When frightened quail will fly straight up with force. Should the top be rigid the quail will injure or kill themselves doing this; and it does not take much to scare a quail.

Quail are about as clean as chickens, and their manure can easily lead to dirty eggs. You can place a container below the quail hutch to grab their droppings, which you can then compost into a rich fertilizer. In the winter, I do add straw to their coop near the door so they have some place warm to sit and to reduce drafts.

I was planning on making it 2 story the dimensions I'm thinking about are 4ft long 3ft wide and 2-2 1/2 ft tall but there would be two cages this big is this big enough for 9 quail and if not or you have any better cage ideas for a small back porch please send them my way.
