When the towpath moved from one side of the canal to the other, as it does here, the snake bridge allowed the horse to cross the bridge without having to undo the harness. The smooth stones minimized the risk of snagging or breaking the rope whilst this took place. Quite an innovative piece of design.

These are known as roving, turnover or 'snake' bridges and are especially common on the Macclesfield Canal.
