James Downie (the artist) was at one time fast becoming one of the most collectable artists on the internet. Born in Manchester in 1949, he went to school in south Manchester. He was always interested in art and spent many hours in the town galleries studying the old masters. It was his best subject at school and he just loved painting.

James Downie Robertson was born in Cowdenbeath in 1931. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art under David Donaldson and Joan Eardley, graduating in 1953. In 1959 he joined the staff of the Glasgow School of Art, ultimately becoming a Senior Lecturer and temporary Head of Drawing and Painting, and had a major impact on the students he taught, before his retirement in 1996.

James Downie was born in Manchester in 1949. He worked in the building industry until 1989 at which point he began painting full time. Downie now lives in Cornwall where he paints from his studio. James Downie's work has been influenced by L S Lowry and this can be seen in some of his northern scenes.
