Every evening at sunset, from the middle of August to October and peaking at the beginning of September, reproductive Pacific Dampwood Termites seem to flutter everywhere on Southern Vancouver Island; but they are particularly numerous in wooded areas. This one landed at the base of an old Douglas-Fir tree, dropped its wings and started poking.

Two are native to British Columbia: the Pacific dampwood termite ( Zootermopsis angusticollis) mainly infests moist deadwood, while the western subterranean termite ( Reticulitermes hesperus) is the region's major termite pest.

Area of Distribution: The Pacific dampwood termite is the largest and the most significant dampwood termite in the United States. This species ranges from Baja California and Mexico to British Columbia. They have been found up to 6,000 feet above sea level, but more commonly in the cool and humid coastal areas.

Zootermopsis angusticollis is a species of termite (Isoptera) in the family Termopsidae, a group known as the dampwood termites. As their name suggests, the dampwood termites can only survive by living off of wood that contains high amounts of moisture.

The dampwood pacific termite is also fairly prevalent but is only commonly found along the western coast.
