The Realm of Chaos, also known as the Aethyr, the Warp and the Empyrean, is a dimension of pure magic, separate to the physical universe of the mortal world. It should not be confused with the Chaos Wastes, which are actually a part of the physical world in its extreme northern and southern reaches.

The Realm of Chaos is the name given to that portion of the Immaterium where the Chaos Gods and their Daemonic followers make their homes, if such a concept even has meaning within the formless extradimensional space that is the Empyrean. Beyond the boundaries of physical space, unrestricted by time or causality, there is a dimension incomprehensible to mortal minds. It lies on the other side.

Heinlein's Starship Troopers were the starting point for the Space Marines before morphing into something very different. Nemesis the Warlock from 2000AD was a big influence on 40K.
