I supplied 12v to VIN pin to arduino uno and the area which I circled in the image started smoking. HOW should I repair this??? when I plugged it into a usb port it started heating up severely.. Original part is LP2985-33DBVR. The LD3985M33R 4A2D is probably some similar chinese part, but it doesn't matter. Any 3.3V LDO in SOT-23.

1 I guess either the regulator has failed creating a short or the 5v rail is shorted to the 3v3 rail elsewhere. Removing the regulator and checking the 3v3 rail is no longer 5v should tell you. The only time I broke a 3v3 regulator, it failed open, so I don't know how likely it is for a LP2985 to fail short.

The 3.3V pin is regulated using an LP2985-33DBVR which has a current limit of 150mA (the specifications on the website say 50mA. This is wrong. I think it is a left-over from the old Uno boards with FTDI chips where the 3.3V was fed directly by the internal 3.3V regulator of the FTDI chip and thus limited to 50mA).
