The Catboat (De Poezenboot) is a unique houseboat that is turned into an animal shelter. It is run by a group of volunteers with a big heart for animals and cats in particular. Opening Hours 13.00 -15.00 hours, closed on Wednesday and Sunday. Free entrance but donations are highly appreciated or simply buy that lovely Poezenboot T-shirt. The cat boat, a beloved Amsterdam landmark, is going from strength to strength and they have recently purchased an entirely new boat funded exclusively by donations. The best part of all is that its open to visitors and completely free although needless to say donations (or purchases from the shop) and hugely appreciated.

Even Puss in Boots of Shrek fame visited the boat last at some point. The catboat is open to the public from 13:00 - 15:00 daily, except for Wednesdays and Sundays. This gives time for people to check out the set-up, meet the cats, and decide whether or not they want to make one (or more) of them a furr-ever member of their family.

The cats have access to the house through a cat door, and they can also sun themselves on the deck. Henriette van Weelde owns/manages Catboat, a cat hotel in Amsterdam that may be the best place in the city to meet cats. Each boat can house up to 50 cats at a time. All of the cats that come into our facility are neutered, vaccinated, and tagged.

What do you do? If you're Henriette van Weelde, you welcome them in. This was the first ripple in the pond that started the Poezenboot, or the 'Catboat'. As the word spread, more stray cats found their way to Henriette, quickly turning her into Amsterdam's beloved "cat lady". But the issue of space soon reared its head.
