We need to go somewhere warm. No, I'm not talking about Waikiki (although I'm def willing to consider it). I'm talking about wool. Over here in the cold white north, we could use a lot more wool in our lives. But sewing with wool isn't all warm fuzzies. If you want to get the most out of this trip, you need a quilty travel advisor.

One of my favorite quilts for strips and strings are this string quilt using paper foundations to create the blocks. Another classic and personal favorite for strips are traditional log cabin quilts. It's easy to trim down your scraps to the right sizes for these blocks.

To make a string quilt, you start with a foundation fabric or foundation paper, then use an easy sew-and-flip technique to attach strips and scraps to the foundation until the scraps completely cover the foundation. That's all there is to it! There's no fussy measuring, no templates to follow, no precision cutting, no pattern to worry about.

String quilts are named for the strips of fabric that are used to make a quilt: the strings. The strings are sewn to a permanent foundation, such as muslin. You can use another fabric for the foundation if you like, or a thinner material, and even prints, but choose something that won't show through the strings after the blocks are assembled.

Fill and heat your iron, and lay a clean pillowcase or dishtowel over an area of wool batting. Once the iron is hot, move it gently all over the surface you've prepared while hitting the "steam" button enthusiastically. This will help bind the fibers into place and keep them at the thickness you're aiming for.
