Mit einer Höhe von 2757 m s.l.m. ist das Stilfser Joch der höchste durch eine asphaltierte Straße, die SS 38, erschlossene Gebirgspass in Italien und nach dem Col de l'Iseran der zweithöchste Gebirgspass der Alpen. Es verbindet Bormio im Veltlin ( Lombardei) mit Prad im Vinschgau ( Südtirol) und trennt den Ortler-Hauptkamm vom Chavalatschkamm.

The Stelvio Pass was built between 1820 and 1825 to connect Lombardy (which was newly part of Austria) with the Tyrol, providing a route from Vienna to Milan. It was built by a renowned engineer, Carlo Donegani, who spent a whole year planning the road before work commenced. It took 2,500 people five years to complete.
