Montmartre paintings are a group of works that Vincent van Gogh created in 1886 and 1887 of the Paris district of Montmartre while living there, at 54 Rue Lepic, with his brother . Rather than capture urban settings in Paris, van Gogh preferred pastoral scenes, such as Montmartre and in the northwest suburbs.

Van Gogh painted this large landscape near his home on the hill of Montmartre. The north side of the hill was dotted with vegetable gardens. Van Gogh painted with quick, loose brushstrokes, revealing the influence of (Neo)-Impressionism. The painting was shown in 1888, alongside the work of other cutting-edge artists at the Salon des Indépendants exhibition.

This is one of the landscapes Vincent van Gogh painted in 1886 after moving to the Montmartre area of Paris. At the time he often went out onto the then still undeveloped side of the hill of Montmartre. The quarry in the foreground stood on the Rue Caulaincourt.
