Pont du Loup's love affair with tourists began in 1840 when a small café was opened overlooking the waters of the river below. At this point the tiny village was known as Patarast, but in 1892 the viaduct was completed and in recognition the proud village took the name of Pont du Loup.. Nestled at the bottom of a steep-sided valley, between the Carvillore and Saint-Barnabé plateaux, the Loup crosses several villages: Bar-sur-Loup, Pont-du-Loup, Tourrettes-sur-Loup, Gourdon, La Colle-sur-Loup and the famous Saint-Paul-de-Vence. The Gorges du Loup can be discovered on foot or by bike, and also through aquatic hiking.

To visit the Gorges du Loup [edit] From the A8 autoroute. From Aix-en-Provence (eastbound) Either exit 42(Cannes-centre). Turn left towards Grasse, then take the D3 to Valbonne and on to Châteauneuf-de-Grasse, then head for Le Bar-sur-Loup and Pont-du-Loup. To enter the Gorges turn left on the D6 just after the village of Pont-du-Loup.

The Pont du Loup used to be a fashionable country resort at the end of the 19th century.Queen Victoria used to come regularly by train thanks to the Provence Railways line. The impressive arches spanning the river were blown up by the German troops in 1944. The ruins of the railway can still be seen.
