John 4:5-42 The Woman at the Well By Dr. Philip W. McLarty The story of the woman at the well is familiar to most churchgoers. I'd like to tell it again this morning in a way that may surprise you. My hope is it'll speak to you in a fresh, new way.

John 4:5-42 EXEGESIS: JOHN 3-4. THE CONTEXT. Chapter 3 records the visit of Nicodemus to Jesus (3:1-17). There are a number of parallels between that story and this one (see below). Then we have an account of people flocking to Jesus for baptism (3:22—although 4:2 says that it was Jesus' disciples doing the baptizing) and John the Baptist.

In John 4:5-42, people were very eager to know more about Jesus so they ask Him and the disciples to stay. This Lent, we must remind ourselves of that we still need to know God deeper than before. As Jesus revealed Himself to the Samaritan woman, there is a deep meaning to that. It means that Jesus will always reveal Himself to us to let us.
