Completed in 1739, it was built by virtue of a vow made by Emperor Charles VI during a plague. The church is dedicated to the Habsburg emperor's namesake, St. Karl Borromäus.

In fact, in a bid to rid Vienna of the plague, Charles VI vowed to build the church in honour of the Italian bishop Karl Borromäus (St Charles Borromeo), who was revered for his heroic work during the plague of 1576-78.
