Before Bitter GmbH's founding, the company's eventual first car was previewed on the Opel stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show of 1969. The prototype Opel Coupe Diplomat, or CD if you're feeling casual, was designed by Chuck Jordan (head of Opel's design) and Dick Ruzzin. The public's reaction to the prototype lead to further discussion.

We see Bitter SC's for sale from time to time in the USA, but very rarely see this CD coupe model on offer even though they were produced in similar numbers. Production ran from 1972 to 1979 on this car, so this is one of the later versions. It is powered by a Chevrolet 327 V8 and has a good amount of style for the money.

By the time the Bitter CD was axed in 1979, it still looked fabulous, but sales had slowed to a trickle, and the car on which it was based, the Opel Diplomat, was being canned. Bitter had no choice but to come up with a sequel, and this time it was based on Opel's new-for-1978 range-topping Senator—hence Bitter's moniker, SC, for Senator Coupé.

The CD was introduced at the end of 1973 after a very successful showing at the Frankfurt Motor Show of September 1973. A euphoric Erich Bitter took 176 orders for his stylish new car at the show, but the oil crisis soon after hit his plans for six and most orders were cancelled.
