The Old Growth Trail is owned and maintained by the good folks at Island Lake Lodge. In fact, they own the entire valley beyond Mount Fernie Provincial Park. To their credit, they have made this area and all of their trails available to the hiking public - free of charge. This trail begins at the 4km mark on the road up to the lodge.

The park protects some of the biggest, oldest black Cottonwoods in the world, interspersed in an old-growth western red cedar forest. Close to town, see 400-year-old Cottonwood trees along a short walking trail. Veloured in dense green moss, the Cottonwood trees congregate on the side of the Elk River at Morrissey Bridge.

This is a beautiful hike through old growth cedar forest. The trail goes through beautiful creeks and meadows - keep an eye open for wildlife as there is often indications of moose and bear in the meadows and near creeks. The trail can be started from the lower parking lot heading west, and later linked with the Old Growth Trail or Cabin Trail.

Old Growth Trail is a stunning hike through ancient cedar forest with massive old trees along the way, making it a well-covered canopy hike. A little creek with a bench makes for a perfect photo spot along the way. It can be done as an out and back from the lodge, or carry on to connect to the Rail Trail for a longer hike.
