Castelo de São Jorge was built in the 10th century during the Moorish period. In 1147, it was conquered by the Portuguese during the Siege of Lisbon. In the late 12th or early 13th century, the castle was renovated and used as the Royal Palace of the Alcáçova. The palace eventually took heavy damage by the earthquake of 1755.
