HMA Submarine Oxley (II), the first Oberon Class submarine built for the RAN, was laid down at Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Scotland on 2 July 1964 and launched on 24 September 1965 by Lady Mary Downer, the wife of the then Australian High Commissioner to Britain, Sir Alexander Downer.

HMAS Otway's colourful history began even before it was completed The impressive tribute to Australian submariners has stood proudly in Holbrook - The Submarine Town - since 1997 250 kilometres from the nearest ocean, in a small country town, is possibly the last place you might expect to find a submarine.

We have the original above water line superstructure of the Oberon Class submarine HMAS OTWAY set within beautiful parkland. Also a large scale model of Lt. Norman Holbrook VC's submarine BII. We have recently completed re-building HMAS OTWAY'S original Wardroom (Officer's quarters) in front of our control room within the Museum.

The town got its name after in honour of Lt. Norman Douglas Holbrook, a decorated wartime submarine captain and winner of the Victoria Cross. To his honour, the town's namesake, the Holbrook council acquired a portion of the hull of HMAS Otway, an Oberon class submarine, after it was decommissioned by the Royal Australian Navy in 1995.

The Australian submarine service was established a third time in 1927, when the British O Class submarines HMAS Oxley and HMAS Otway were commissioned. These submarines sailed from Portsmouth for Sydney on 8 February 1928, but did not arrive in Australia until 14 February 1929; numerous mechanical problems delayed their delivery voyage.
